Glass Molding:
Gobs of glass travel round on a carousel.

Riding on a roundabout (carousel), a big indexing table,  the moulds (molds) go to the filling station, at the end of the forehearth, where the molten glass is dropped in, round to a pressing station for forming, then as they go around, the glass cools by radiation and conduction so that it can set. Eventually the solidified product, cool enough, is unloaded and the moulds return to be filled again.
Each mould has a slightly different thermal character. With the variations in filling quantities and temperatures and ambient conditions it becomes necessary to devise control schemes to regulate the temperatures of each of the moulds, although the temperature can be measured (sampled) only once per cycle pyrometrically and only in certain places can cooling or heating be applied. My approach was to develop a simulation of the set of moulds, tracking each one as it went around, through changing circumstances (meaning changing sets of differential equations) so that the thermal dynamics of the moulds could be merged with the sequence of events, allowing the design of control rules which could accomodate the vagaries of the production process.

If you have a problem in the control or dynamics of a cyclic process involving heat and mass transfer, maybe batch chemical reactions as well, then contact me.

Invitation. McCann can help if you have a design or operational problem that needs some technical support that is outside your team's experience, some quantitative assessment of what is really the cause of the difficulties, some design alternatives or just a fresh look by an intelligent interrogator.
If you have a problem with the behaviour of a market sector, plant, process or item of equipment and would like to get a quantitative handle on it to improve yield or optimise performance, then contact me. I'm always ready to give a little time to discuss a new puzzle, in confidence, of course. We'll only worry about fees when there is some defined work. I can be flexible about how I work with you.
